Peer Service

We provide opportunities for our Scholars to connect and share with other students in a service role. These are similar to peer mentoring where experienced students guide new students to help them transition and integrate successfully. Here is a great article from Newcastle University highlighting three ways being a peer mentor benefits graduate students.

The Office of Graduate Studies offers three specific ways for our Graduate Student Scholars to connect and help their peers. See below! These opportunities are grounded in skills and activities and are 'touch points' which we see as part of the larger Graduate Studies support network.

In addition, we offer workshops on mentorship, and how to help with the specific tasks.

We endeavor to make sure that in all cases the Scholars are able to (1) enhance their graduate skills (e.g., leadership, team working, communication and problem solving, planning and organizing), (2) become more engaged learners, and (3) further develop their network.

Career Exploration

In partnership with the Career Studio, Scholars are able to become Who You Are Matters! facilitators. This game is a starting place for students to explore through storytelling and self-reflection. A very important first step in career exploration.

Student Award Writing and Editing Support

Our Scholars have successfully received a major graduate award which comes with the lived reality of writing and receiving a scholarship or grant. After receiving training from our Student Research Engagement Coordinator, Scholars are able to provide support one-on-one or via small writing circles.

CREATE Peers and Adjudimentors

CREATE is VIU's largest student knowledge sharing event. There are a number of opportunities to guide students who need support with public speaking, communication designs and confidence building. Further, during the event we engage Adjudimentors to help provide feedback to CREATE participants.
