Frequently Asked Questions

There are tonnes of great reasons for you to participate! It’s free, fun, and a great way to build relationships and network. You can practice your presentation skills as well as increase exposure for you and the work you’re doing. Bolster your CV (resume) for employment and graduate school, and build your “research portfolio” for graduate school and research scholarship applications (e.g. NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship – Master’s Awards). Finally, there’s a chance to win great prizes, and who doesn’t love prizes?

Of course! We strongly encourage any student in any discipline to participate in CREATE. It will help make this year’s event even more successful, and diversity is what we strive for. Any major project suitable to your discipline works (the creation, dissemination, or exchange of knowledge or creative activity within one’s discipline). See Classifying Student Scholarship at VIU web page for examples of multi-disciplinary projects.

If you have questions please contact Kendra, the Student Research Engagement Coordinator.

Yes. We understand students’ research may not be complete in time for the CREATE Conference. Students are welcome to present your problems, ideas, hypotheses, methodologies and any preliminary data that you have.

Yes. Multiple author presentations are accepted. It is a great idea to recognize your faculty supervisor and/or co-investigators, if applicable (with their permission!).

Yes, we offer free poster printing for the first 109 people who submit a correctly formatted poster file through the Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity Office! Resources are limited and allocated based on registration on a first-come, first-serve basis. Printing requirements will be emailed after you complete the submission, and files must be received by March 25 at the very latest.

Ideally, we will accept all participants for CREATE and do our best to ensure all students can participate. However, if we receive more registrants than spots available, then a selection may be required based on submission date so don't hesitate, send your submission as soon as you are able! We are already receiving an overwhelming amount of inquiries and working to secure even more space!

Of course! Everyone is welcome to enjoy all aspects of CREATE for free, including all posters and displays, oral presentations/performances/films, and the scholarship slam. We are also looking for student volunteers to help us make this the most successful CREATE event yet! By volunteering you will gain experience in organizing an event which looks great on your resume and is a bonus when applying for scholarships and awards. To volunteer, email the CREATE Volunteer Coordinator Taisa Andrushko.

During CREATE we are looking for student volunteers to help the event run smoothly. Some duties could include: helping students set up their posters and displays, providing information to students/public about the People's Choice voting and drop boxes, helping set up and take down, distributing advertisements, and other jobs as they arise.

Yes. We are looking for faculty judges to volunteer their time and help judge the various sessions we are hosting. Please email our CREATE Volunteer Coordinator Taisa Andrushko for more information and to sign up.

We are trying to make the judging as simple as possible. We will assign judges 1-3 hour timeslots based on their availability. Judges may be asked to judge 10 minute presentations or performances, posters, displays or Scholarship Slams. Judges will be given clear instructions with rubrics to assist in their task.
