A Celebration of Research & Creativity April 2021!

VIU's Research Month (April) & CREATE 2021!

Since we missed it last year, from April 1st to April 30th this year, the entire VIU community is invited to participate in an exciting fun-filled and informative month of sharing scholarship, research and creative activity across all campuses!  There are many ways to participate including:
  • Check out the Calendar of Events here.
  • The entire VIU Community can participate in the Virtual Student CREATE Conference events from April 12 to 15th  (see schedule here) including Posters, Slams, Short Film Fest, Rant like Rick, Photos, Performances and More!
  • Join Us for a virtual Faculty Research and Creative Activity Symposium on Friday April 16th from 9am to 3pm. See the Schedule of Presenters Here.
  • Faculty and Staff are invited to submit their photos, posters or videos of Research in Action Contest! Prizes! Show and tell us about your research and creative activity! Deadline is April 30th (see here or below for more info).
  • All activities and free to attend and open to everyone!

VIU Employee Virtual Poster, Photo & Video Contests! Prizes!

All VIU Faculty and Staff are invited to submit photos (up to 5), a poster and/ or video, throughout the month of April,  as part of sharing and celebrating Research in Action!

  • Submit: via email to tanis.dagert@viu.ca  by April 30th, 2021
  • Subject line: Poster, Video or Photo. 
  • Please include your name, department and brief description (50 words or less).
  • All entrants names will go into a Prize Draw for some great VIU Swag!

Call for Posters!

Submit a research and creative activity Poster as a PDF by April 30th at midnight so we can add it to a page as part of Research Month Celebrations 2021. Research and Info-graphic style posters are welcome!  Check out Derek Crowe's better poster visual design principles here.

Call for Videos!

Make a short Pecha Kucha or Explainer Video that captures the essence of a research or creative activity project that you've been involved in. Upload it to VIUTube and then send us the link! Include your name, department and brief description (50 words or less), plus consent (see above). See some examples here: https://research.viu.ca/videos

Photos!

Your project may have happened in a lab, studio, the field or in community. Images captured through the use of scientific tools are also acceptable. You may want to submit a photo that shows how the pandemic impacted your research. Selfies of Researchers in Action are strongly encouraged too! Send up to five photos and include your name, department and brief description (50 words or less) of the project/ photo.

Notes on Photo / Image Entries:

    • Only photos taken within the previous 12 months are eligible.
    • You must have taken the photo and have permission to submit the photo. 
    • Images must be photo quality (3000x2400 pixels or larger) and in JPEG format. Files should be a maximum of 8 MB. Images not meeting these specifications will not be accepted.
    • If there are individuals clearly visible in the photo, the photographer must receive written consent prior to entering and include this as part of the entry
      • Example consent: I [name of person in picture] give [your name] permission to submit a picture that includes an identifiable image of me to the CREATE 2021 photography event. I am aware this picture may be published in print (brochures, advertisements) or electronic mediums (web/social media) to promote and/or highlight research, university activities, and to promote subsequent photograph contests. I will not receive monetary compensation.  [Signed by the person in photo] 
    • By entering the contest, the photographer grants the right to VIU to publish the photograph in print (brochures, advertisements) or electronic mediums (web/social media) to promote and/or highlight research, university activities, and to promote subsequent photograph contests. Photo credit will be given where possible.
