Awards for Celebrating Excellence

In 2018, Vancouver Island University established two new sets of awards to celebrate excellence in community engagement and scholarship, research and creative activity. These awards align with the institution's core values of discovery, engagement, achievement and celebration as identified in the Academic Plan: Promoting and Celebrating Access to Excellence and to action #5 in the Strategic Plan: Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity.

These awards are offered annually and announced at a celebratory event each fall.

The President's Awards for Community Engagement

The purpose of the President’s Awards for Outstanding Community Engagement is to recognize excellence in community engagement activities. These awards publicly recognize employees at the institution for their efforts to support the University’s core commitment to engaging with the community and region as articulated in our strategic action plan.

Community engagement relies upon the activities of VIU’s Employees in collaboration with the communities and organizations that VIU serves. These activities build our collective capacity, improve wellbeing, and enhance the resiliency of those served by the University.  

There are six award categories:

  1. Community-University partnership award
  2. Community-engaged scholarship, research and creative activity award
  3. Community leadership award
  4. Community outreach award
  5. Indigenous engagement award
  6. International engagement award

President Award's nominations packages will be accepted until May 31, 2023.

The Provost Awards for Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity

The purpose of the Provost Awards for outstanding Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity is to recognize Vancouver Island faculty members for excellence in scholarship, research and creative activity. These awards publicly recognize faculty for their efforts to support the University’s core commitment to excellence in a wide range of scholarship, applied research and community engagement. There are eight award categories including:

  1. Undergraduate research mentor award
  2. Graduate student research  mentor award
  3. Distinguished researcher award
  4. Interdisciplinary research award
  5. Early career research excellence award
  6. Knowledge mobilization award
  7. Deans' Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Award
  8. SRCA Service Award

Provost Award nomination packages will be accepted between March 15 and May 15.
