An experienced person whose primary role is to council improvement while acting in the traditional roles of judge or adjudicator.

Welcome VIU Employees, Graduate Students, and members of the wider community! Thank you for considering being an adjudimentor at CREATE. This is your chance to provide valuable feedback to students and help CREATE distribute over $25,000 in awards and prizes. You will likely learn lots too!

You do not have to be a subject matter expert. Your role is to help students be better communicators.

Events and Brief Details

What: Posters could be 'research' - tells the whole project's story, or 'infographic' - tells one part of the project's story (usually what they were trying to find out). The posters are typically in a large format, 36" x 48", and are meant to challenge the student to tell a story with precise language in a visually appealing medium.

Where: Upper Cafeteria on VIU's Nanaimo campus

How:

  1. You show up at your designated time and check in at the Welcome Table.
  2. You will sign up for a 2-hour slot which should be plenty of time to review your assigned posters.
  3. This year the process will be done via Google Forms, so please bring your device to scan a QRCode and access the forms.
  4. You go to a poster that you have been assigned and spend 5-10 minutes learning. You may ask the student(s) to explain their poster/project or other questions that come up.
  5. Complete their rubric sheet.
  6. Move to the next assigned poster and repeat.
  7. When you have completed all your sheets, return your badge to the Welcome Desk.
  8. Feel free to check out the other posters or events happening at CREATE.

What: These are classic oral presentations where students have 10 minutes to talk about their project. They usually also incorporate a slide show to assist their presentation. They are meant to challenge the student's public speaking skills.

Where: The Royal Arbutus Room (RAR), located in the Upper Cafeteria on VIU's Nanaimo campus

How:

  1. You show up at your designated time and check in at the Welcome Table.
  2. They will provide you with your badge and direct you up to the RAR.
  3. There will be a dedicated table for you to sit and all your materials will be provided.
  4. An emcee will be there to help oversee the event.
  5. The student(s) will do their presentation and there will be time for questions at the end of each presentation.
  6. Complete their rubric sheet.
  7. Next presentation will start and repeat.
  8. When the event ends the emcee will collect your sheets and you may return your badge to the Welcome Desk.
  9. Feel free to check out the other events happening at CREATE.

Into photography? Enjoy using visual aids and pictures as a way to share knowledge? This could be for you!

What: The As Seen by VIU Photography Exhibit highlights a number of different images taken by students over the last 12 months. 

Where: Online, in the Malaspina Theatre Lobby (April 8 and 9), and in the Main Cafeteria (April 10 and 11) on VIU's Nanaimo campus

How:

  1. This will be determined by where you want to view the photos. But basically you look at them all and then rank your top three and list reasons why you chose them.

Into Pods? Enjoy learning by listening? This could be for you!

What: Podcasts are basically a program made available in a digital format. For CREATE a number of student hosts will engage in a discussion about a variety of topics. The students are challenged to communicate their topic effectively in a completely oral environment. Be prepared to learn lots! 

Where: Online

How:

  1. You will receive the link to the CREATE Pods Webpage and a link to the Google Forms to complete your assessment. 
  2. Over the course of 4-5 days listen to each pod and provide feedback on the forms.

Do you remember Rick Mercer's Rants? Those were the muse for this event.

What: Rants are opinionated speeches that usually express a position. Good ones are often witty, humourous and entertaining. They are designed to leave a lasting impression. The Rant-Like-Rick event provides students with a stage (or soapbox) and challenges them to be concise, inspiring, and to communicate a passion using wit, humour, and their own voice. 

Where: Online, short video format (max 2 minutes each)

How:

  1. You will receive the link to the CREATE Rant-like-Rick Webpage and a link to the Google Forms to complete your assessment. 
  2. Over the course of 4-5 days watch each rant and provide feedback via Google forms.
