Vancouver Island University and the City of Nanaimo are proud to host the 7th International Symposium on Sturgeon (ISS7) which took place in Nanaimo, Canada on July 21-25, 2013. Titled “Sturgeon, Science and Society – at the Crossroads: Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century”, this is the premier conference on sturgeons held every 4 years by the World Sturgeon Conservation Society.

Sturgeons are considered “living fossils” as they have remained largely unchanged for over 160 million years. Yet their future is in peril. The challenges include both the dire future of most species, as populations have collapsed due to over-harvesting, and the promise of sturgeon hatcheries to support conservation/restoration efforts, as well as for economic development from sustainable farmed caviar and meat production.

The conference will focus on seven major themes including conservation and protection, stock assessment, human impacts, public engagement, aquaculture, caviar and processing as well as international trade and traceability. Building on previous ISS meetings held most recently in the US (2001) Iran (2005) and China (2009), we expect over 600 delegates from 35 countries to attend.

The goal of ISS meetings is to bring together scientists, policy-makers, conservationists, farmers, technologists, industry, and other stakeholders to examine topics critical to sturgeon. ISS7 offers a unique opportunity to discuss the most current issues, network with the leaders in their field, and showcase products, services and technologies.

Western Diversification provided a strategic investment of $717,000 for capital items to fully fit out the new Vancouver Island University (VIU) International Centre for Sturgeon Studies (ICSS) on the Nanaimo campus. The ICSS began partial operations in January 2011 enhancing VIU’s capacity in sturgeon research. The capital grant from WD provides for some essential equipment that will allow VIU to achieve its goal to become a knowledge and innovation hub supporting the development of a sustainable sturgeon aquaculture industry in BC.

Mr. Andrew Saxton, Member of Parliament for North Vancouver and Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and for Western Economic Diversification, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification made a formal announcement of this funding on Monday September 12, 2011 at 1100 a.m. at the ICSS.
