With John McCormick, Executive Director. John will talk about the work of the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society as one of 61 independently governed JHS affiliates across the country that is working on projects that foster a safe and supported community. With the breadth of programs the Society manages, John will discuss ways in which the organization work collaboratively and innovatively to support this vision.

John has spent more than 25 years working in community development and social justice across Canada. He’s consulted in places as far flung as India. From 2005-2011 developed the social planning role for the Resort Municipality of Whistler in anticipation of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. His work includes the innovative education thinktank at the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education. In 2014 he helped raise the then-most successful crowd-funding of a public art piece for Granville Island’s cement siloes to be transformed into “Giants” by artists Os Gemeos as part of the 2014 Vancouver Biennale public art festival.
