Eligibility

To participate in VIU's 3MT students must currently be registered in a graduate program at VIU. Students must not have graduated prior to the date of the competition final (April 13, 2021).

Presentations must be based on research that is directly related to the student’s graduate program thesis. Research performed for employment should not be presented.

VIU's 3MT Finals will be held via Zoom on April 13, 2021 from 6-8pm. It is expected all the program finalists will be in attendance at the 3MT. The VIU winner needs to be able to attend the virtual regional on May 13.

Rules

  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description)
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted
  • No additional props (e.g. laser pointers, costumes, laboratory equipment or musical instruments) are permitted
  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum. Judges are recommended to deduct marks from presentations that exceed 3 minutes.
  • Presentations are to be spoken words (e.g. no poems, raps or songs)
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when the presenter starts their presentation through movement or speech
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

Dates to Know

April 5: Programs to forward names of three students that will be their representatives at the VIU 3MT with the following for each student:

  • Static slide (png)
  • Video of the presentation (mp4)
  • Picture of the student (png)

April 13 @ 6pm: VIU 3MT Competition via Zoom

May 13 (afternoon): Western Regional Competition hosted by Athabasca University. Need to provide a pre-recorded video, static ppt slide, and a photo .  The deadline to submit all three will be Friday, April 30, 2021.
