Painted anemone, Urticina grebelnyi

Phylum Cnidaria, Family Actiniidae

Painted anemone; two specimens, one with tentacle out the other with tentacles retracted inside the trunk

Habitat: Attached to rocks in the intertidal zone, down to 30 metres deep.

Description: Variably coloured from tan to red-green stipes, with banded tentacles. The many vesicle or tubercles on the body distinguish this specimen from the previously named Urticina crassiformis

Distribution: Alaska to southern California

Fun Fact: They use barbed tubules expelled from their stout tentacles to immobilize small fish, crustaceans and anything organic that drifts close enough.
