VIU Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC)

"The CCAC is the national peer review agency responsible for setting and maintaining standards for the ethical use and care of animals used in science (research, teaching and testing) throughout Canada." (CCAC Website).

VIU's Animal Care and Use Policies are developed in accordance with CCAC standards and guidelines. VIU holds a Certificate of Good Animal Practices from CCAC, which means that VIU's Animal Care and Use program has been assessed by a CCAC assessment panel. The panel has found VIU's standards satisfy CCAC's guidelines and policy statements.

Video "Respect With Reason"

Copies of this CCAC video (regarding the philosophy of the care and use of animals), is available from the Fisheries and Aquaculture and Biology Departments, and from the Main Library (Nanaimo campus). All faculty, staff and students involved in the care and use of animals for teaching or research at Vancouver Island University are recommended to view the video so they may have a proper understanding of the stance that has been embraced by the institution.
