This past spring VIU announced its first REACH award recipients. The REACH Awards provide funding for student engagement in research from study design to knowledge mobilization. The stipend provides a one-time award of $2,000 per student. I recently asked this inaugural group some questions about their projects. Overall, the responses are indicative of an impressive range of student creativity and scholarship. I couldn’t capture all their amazing projects here, but it will certainly give you an appreciation for some of the great work happening by our students. Read on to find out more!

The summer of 2018 proved to be very enlightening for six VIU science students. They secured Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRAs) which are administered by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). This program is designed to help fund student researchers so they can “nurture interest and fully develop potential for a research career in the natural sciences and engineering”. VIU’s 2018 students were Bernadette Alvarez, Trevor Dickinson, Arden Hessels, Joseph Monaghan, Tyler Sims and Csilla Vasarhelyi. Collectively they worked on a large variety of projects with different supervisors. I recently asked this group some questions about what they have been up to. Overall, it appears they are receiving some amazing hands on experience and are having a great time. I couldn’t capture the entirety of their summer experiences, but their words will certainly give you an appreciation for what they have been up to. Read on to find out more!
