Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Vancouver Island University is a values-based institution. One of the six core values enshrined in our Academic Plan is diversity; the Plan states “we value human diversity in all its dimensions and are committed to achieving and ensuring learning and working environments that are equitable, diverse and inclusive.”

VIU has now established a dedicated team to promote and ensure equity, diversity and inclusion across all the individuals, groups, departments and offices which make up our VIU community.

VIU has been selected to participate in two federal government programs to build capacity in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). Both the Equity Diversity and Inclusion Capacity Building Grant and the Dimensions Program are Canadian Granting Agencies Initiatives supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The generous funding from the Capacity-Building Grant supports the EDIA program at VIU.

VIU has also secured a SSHRC Connection Grant to host an EDI Symposium to bring together 14 institutions that are members of the Alliance of Canadian Comprehensive Research Universities (ACCRU), a network of small and medium-sized comprehensive universities from across Canada, to establish a community of practice around EDI action planning.
