With Samantha Letourneau, Executive Director of Literacy Central Vancouver Island.  In honour of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada’  Samantha will reflect on this question from her experience, which is rooted in participatory literacy work. Participatory literacy work has everything to do with the primacy of learners’ knowledge, feelings and experience. How do we meet the needs of women learners, while respecting their privacy and cultural expectations, in a way that might enable them to expand the choices they have and increase their ability to make decisions, without imposing an agenda of our own? When women learners are at the centre of the curriculum, when they build the curriculum, when they participate in discussions, when these things occur, women are strengthened in ways that are hard to measure but that nonetheless serve them well.
