Bring Your Lunch & Learn about ... The Lower Cat Stream Ecological Region of VIU is a Great Outdoor Classroom for Vancouver Island University
B305 Room 440 (SRCA Lounge)
Following the lead of the Elder Kwulasulwat Dr. Ellen White, we used the Lower Cat Stream ecological region of Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo as an outdoor classroom to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered by red cedar, yew, red alder, big-leaf maple, arbutus, and douglas fir trees indigenous to the region. The VIU outdoor classroom area connects with Buttertubs Estuary and the Millstone River, a wild salmon bearing stream. The Lower Cat Stream ecological region of Vancouver Island University is an excellent area for an outdoor classroom, and preservation of ecological regions on university campuses reduces air pollution and improves air quality.
