Gender Historians Bring International Research Journal to VIU

The world’s leading journal on the history of gender relations is now basing its North American editorial operations out of VIU. History Professors Dr. Cheryl Krasnick Warsh, Dr. Katharine Rollwagen and Dr. Cathryn Spence made a successful bid to become the North American co-editors of Gender & History, a well-respected international journal that publishes academic articles exploring the history of gender relations. Lunch Series Looks to Satisfy Appetites for Information

The purpose of the Lunch and Learn series is to build a culture of knowledge sharing at VIU — whether it’s original research, scholarship or other creative activity — in a supportive, non-formal setting. "It's a great way to foster community, lifelong learning and is an excellent use of your lunch break,” says Tanis Dagert,Community Liaison with the Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Office. VIU Professor and Master’s Student Collaborate to Develop Vancouver Island's Water Budget

Geography Professor Dr. Alan Gilchrist and Master of Geographic Information Systems Applications student Tim Sivak are developing a tool that will answer the question of how much water Vancouver Island really has available for human use, and where shortages exist or are developing. The pair have partnered with the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development; the Regional District of Nanaimo; and the Cowichan Valley Regional District to develop a water budget that will help answer this question for many communities and regions across Vancouver Island. VIU Team on the Cutting Edge of Better, More Accurate Drug Testing

Many drug users know their supply is tainted by the lethal opioid fentanyl, but new tech being developed at VIU tells them just how dangerous the next dose of heroin or cocaine could be. VIU professor Chris Gill and his team work with sensitive analysis machines known as mass spectrometers, which can take an incredibly small sample of a drug and accurately show within minutes what will actually end up inside a user's veins.  Read full story.
 

VIU and McGill Partner to Create Learning and Research Opportunities in Indigenous Studies

Prof. Christopher Manfredi, Provost and Vice-Principal Academic, McGill University, and Dr. Ralph Nilson, President and Vice-Chancellor of VIU, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreeing to explore how the universities can work together to further support research and learning in the areas of Indigenous education and Indigenous studies Read full story.
 

VIU's Campus Community Radio CHLY Wins International Crimestoppers Award!

A unique local pilot project launched in 2016 received recognition at an International Crimestoppers Conference in Panama City for its radio ads aimed at people whose first language is not English. Four VIU International students recorded the ads in the VIU Library audio recording booth, assisted by volunteer CHLY Radio programmers.  The ads were recorded in Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese and Spanish and broadcast to the Nanaimo area in order to encourage reporting crime, a better understanding of the law, and to help keep our community safer.

Historically, Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Mental Health and related issues have been treated by different systems of care. Join the conversation about what is currently happening, examples of best practice, and how we can make change. Organized by the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society (NBIS), Island Health, March of Dimes Canada, Vancouver Island University, the BC SUPPORT Unit Vancouver Island Centre, People First Media, and people with lived experience of acquired brain injury. Research Week and CREATE 2019

April 8-12, 2019
Planning is already underway to make this an INCREDIBLE week for students, employees and community members. Faculty - if you are making some aspect of CREATE part of a course for next semester, connect with Kendra for a class presentation on the registration process, volunteering, presentations, posters etc. There will be an opportunity to include year end research related events in our Research Week Events Calendar, and stay tuned for the 'Call for Presentations' for the Faculty Research & Creative Activity Symposium.

Institute: Beginning a Research Program
Nov. 16-18, 2018 @ Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY

Starting a successful research program and conducting scholarly work at a predominantly undergraduate institution pose unique challenges for a new faculty member. This institute gives pre-tenured faculty members the opportunity to learn from and discuss with experienced faculty how to establish and manage a research program with undergraduates. At the institute, participants also will prepare plans for starting and/or advancing their individual research programs at their respective campuses. Save the Date for Congress 2019: Circles of Conversation. June 1-7, 2019, to be held at UBC in Vancouver

A convergence of over 70 scholarly associations, each holding their annual conference under one umbrella. The theme will emphasize the deep, two-way relationships between the university and the communities it serves: local, provincial, national, and globa with a focus on productive scholarly relations with Indigenous communities. Includes space for dialogue, debate, and dissent, and will showcase creative critical engagements — in literature, visual arts, and music — with topics as diverse as sustainability, accessibility, global mobility, health, culture, and, of course, education.


Report: Raising Canada: A Report on Children in Canada, Their Health and Well-Being

Children First Canada released a report providing a high-level analysis of the health and wellbeing of children in Canada. Mental and physical health are discussed, as well as the impacts of factors such as poverty and food insecurity. Published by The University of Calgary, O'Brien Institute for Public Health / Children First Canada, 2018.

New! Innovative Solutions Canada Program: This program aims to support innovation and growth of Canadian small businesses by providing funding to develop novel solutions to challenges proposed by federal departments. Science Horizons Youth Internship Program - Science Horizons supports green jobs for youth by providing wage subsidies to eligible employers to hire interns in environmental and clean technology sectors. Interns must be recent college or university graduates eligible to work in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).
