It's Science Literacy Week! Sept 17-23

To help celebrate Canada’s outstanding scientists and science communicators from coast-to-coast, the VIU Library is displaying science books during the month of September. Come in and browse the books available to check-out for your reading pleasure! Check out other events happening at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library by clicking on the link here, including an Engineering Egg Drop Challenge and Coding for Kids.

 

Congratulations Dr. Shannon Dames!

Nursing Professor Dr. Shannon Dames and a multidisciplinary team from Island Health are collaborating to develop curriculum that will emphasize the importance of promoting self-compassion among healthcare providers. Dames and team were awarded a $10,000 Reach award from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) for their research into improving the healthcare worker experience and developing an evidence-based strategy to address the commonly reported issue of hostile work environments. Congratulations Dr. Georgina Martin for a Book Chapter!

The book titled Indigenous Research: Theories, Practices, and Relationships includes a chapter by Dr. Martin on 'Storytelling and Narrative Inquiry: Exploring Research Methodologies.' In collaboration with their communities, and with guidance from Elders and other traditional knowledge keepers, each contributor in the book links their personal narrative of Indigenous research to current discussions and debates. Published by Canadian Scholars Press. Link to purchase here.

VIU's President Dr. Ralph Nilson announced the inaugural winners of the Community Engagement Awards on Sept. 11th including:
 
  • Community Leadership Award: Ms. Eiko Eby (Sports, Health & Physical Education Department) and Ms. Ruby Barclay (University Relations/Alumni)
  • Community Outreach Award: Mr. Aubrey Robertson (Project Aurora)
  • Community-Engaged Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Award: Dr. Imogene Lim (Anthropology) and Dr. Stephen Davies (History)
  • Exemplary Community – Academic Partnership Award: Dr. Pam Shaw (Geography) for City of Parksville partnership
  • Indigenous Engagement Award: Ms. Sylvia Scow (Aboriginal Education) and the VIU Elder’s Council
  • International Engagement Award: Dr. Brian Dick (Physics/ Engineering/ Astronomy) and Mr. Darrel Harvey (International Education)
 

Biology Professor Jasmine Janes Nominated for 'Science Borealis' People’s Choice Award for Best Science Blog'!
