VIU Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

Animal Care and 490/491 Projects

Undergraduate research projects that involve the use of vertebrates at VIU are treated the same as faculty research from the perspective of animal care. Students and their supervisor must:

- Obtain approval of their protocol from the Animal Care Committee (ACC) prior to the start of the project

- Have their proposal reviewed for scientific merit (can be done by their Committee or internally within VIU)

- Complete appropriate training, including the 4 Core CCAC Modules

Undergraduate research project proposals will only be reviewed at scheduled ACC meetings, so it is important that Animal User Protocol (AUP) applications be submitted by the deadline appropriate for the desired project start date.

The ACC is to help students and their supervisors navigate the ACC approval process and the Institutional Veterinarian is available to provide advice on recommended methods. Please contact the Animal Care Coordinator if you would like to take advantage of this expertise.
